Diane Arbus (New York, 1923–1971) revolutionized the art she practiced. Her bold subject matter and photographic approach produced a body of work that is often shocking in its purity, in its steadfast celebration of things as they are. Her gift for rendering strange those things we consider most familiar, and for uncovering the familiar within the exotic, enlarges our understanding of ourselves.

In this first major retrospective in France, Jeu de Paume presents a selection of two hundred photographs that affords an opportunity to explore the origins, scope, and aspirations of a wholly original force in photography. It includes all of the artist’s iconic photographs as well as many that have never been publicly exhibited. Even the earliest examples of her work demonstrate Arbus’s distinctive sensibility through the expression on a face, someone’s posture, the character of the light, and the personal implications of objects in a room or landscape. These elements, animated by the singular relationship between the photographer and her subject, conspire to implicate the viewer with the force of a personal encounter.

Pictoplasma select – every festival – innovative creations studios in the forefront of research and independent filmmakers who are dedicated to designing creatures. For the first time in Paris, Pictoplasma presents an exhibition, lectures, concerts, performances and screenings.

pictoplama, post digital monsters: a unique invitation

“Post-Digital” in reference to the fact that the character design and the passion for art emerged with the rise of digital culture in the early 2000s. Internet and new technologies have revolutionized the exchange of images and their re-interpretation.
“Monsters” because the digital age opens a new area of virtual reality that needs to be inhabited by characters attractive. These new icons give us the strange sensation of being watched by entities unknown, came from parallel universes. The monsters are made both playful and cute things that attract us, and disturbing creatures and foreign frighten us.

This exhibit marks the reopening of the Gallery Southeast, new exhibition space at the Grand Palais.
Emerged in the early 1970s, the game is a young medium that has continued to evolve and grow to become today a major cultural industry.
From its inception, this new medium has been the subject of much discussion and analysis will focus primarily on the impact of social or personal use. This exhibition aims to address a different perspective, aesthetic and cultural.
Through 80 games, consoles and computers that the public is invited to manipulate, the exhibition traces the history of video game appeared in the 1970s to the present. Interactive, it evokes the world, series, genres and graphic styles associated with it. Combining motion picture, music, dialogue, interaction and complex scenarios, the video game has become over time a cultural artifact in its own right and a real mode of expression.Prices: 8 euros – Reduced price: € 6 (6-12 years old, unemployed, large families and Sesame subscribers) – Family ticket (2 adults + 2 or 2 young children): € 22 (one child entry available).Free up to 5 years old.

The Centre Pompidou is presenting the first French retrospective dedicated to the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama: chronologically following her career through 150 works created between 1949 and 2001, the exhibition tracks the major moments in the life of the artist and illustrates the protean character (paintings, sculptures, environments, performances) of a collection of works which Kusama has herself described as “obsessional”. Strongly rooted in a childhood memory, a hallucination from which she developed the polka dot motif, this unclassified work still has significant influence on the cotemporary scene.

A fabulous Bivouac, staged across 1,000 square metres in Galerie 3 of the Centre Pompidou-Metz, this exhibition of works by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec sets out the result of almost fifteen years of mutual collaboration.
Their first major solo show in France, Bivouac highlights an exceptional international career, during which the two brothers have worked with some of the greatest names in design, been crowned by numerous awards and the presence of their work in public collections.

Imagined as a temporary encampment – hence its name - Bivouac is deliberately divested of scenographic elements other than the Bouroullecs’ work. Movement is imparted by contrasting scales, transparency and superpositions.
Visitors are invited to wander around the gallery, moving between prototypes and finished objects, mass-produced and hand-crafted works.
Bivouac highlights the immense diversity of these creations and economies achieved in production. It also addresses key concepts in the Bouroullecs’ research: objects which are nomadic, ephemeral, modular, organic, flexible.

The exhibition is neither an inventory nor a retrospective of their work. Rather, it illustrates the current state of their designs and research, in constant evolution.

This first solo show at the Centre Pompidou-Metz gives pride of place to design as a fundamental and prolific discipline in contemporary creation, and an open field for research at the junction of experimentation and daily life. In keeping with the Centre Pompidou, it emphasises a determination to embrace “art in all its forms” so that visitors might discover a wide spectrum of creation.

Mathematics: a beautiful elsewhere

Mathematics: A Beautiful Elsewhere is a unique exhibition created by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain with the aim of offering visitors, to use the mathematician Alexandre Grothendieck’s expression, “a sudden change of scenery.” The Fondation Cartier has opened its doors to the community of mathematicians and invited a number of artists to accompany them. They are the artisans and thinkers, the explorers and builders of this exhibition.

A large number of mathematicians and scientists contributed to the creation of this exhibition, and eight of them acted as its overseers, accompanied by nine artists chosen for their exceptional ability to listen, as well as for their great sense of curiosity and wonder. They worked together to transform the abstract thinking of mathematics into a stimulating experience for the mind and the senses, an experience accessible to everyone.

As part of the exhibition, Nomadic Nights presents a series of events, performances and concerts.

In this new event for children and families, an unidentified natural object (UNO) has taken over the Children’s gallery; “Le Blobterre de matali” (the Blobterre of Matali), a kind of garden and hybrid space growing and proliferating an extraordinary neo-vegetation. Just like its emissary Fl’om, a half-flower half-man, both primitive and artificial Blobterre reinvents the urban space. How can we spend time in a museum that is an experiment? It is in response to this question that designer and creator Matali Crasset created this parallel world for the Centre Pompidou.
